How to Impress a Potential Employer


OK! Your resume has been approved and the company would like to meet with you for an interview. How can you take control of an interview, and make sure that you are seen as the best candidate for the position? When recruiting agencies interview candidates, should provide the following suggestions and skills to help you make it a successful interview.

The Interview


BEFORE THE INTERVIEW: PREPARE YOURSELF

Research the company: Be prepared to answer any questions that the interviewer will have for you with regard to what you think of the company, and how much you know about the company. Check out the company website - Know about their history and growth over the years, major changes to the company and product - Check out other company profiles and relevant press releases through websites like Google, so you are aware of successes and public opinion of the company.

Prepare answers but don’t over-prepare: While it’s a good idea to know your answers to the regularly asked questions, don’t be too rigid in the answers. Interviews want to know that you are being honest, and that you can think on your feet, not that you can memorize facts and opinions about yourself.

Research the interviewers that you will be meeting with. Know their role and responsibilities in the company.

Know the job description inside and out. Be able to tell the interviewers exactly how your skills match their needs, and how your experiences and qualifications will benefit the role.

Prepare questions. An interview is a two way street, and the interviewer will expect you to have questions for them. Saying “no, I have no questions” is a quick way of saying that you aren’t interested enough in the position to find our more. Focus on the company and responsibilities of the position you are interviewing for. Try to avoid any “what’s in it for me” questions such as vacation, benefits etc. These come later.

Why you left. Explain the reasons why you have left your former employer honestly, but in the best and most positive manner. Don’t speak negatively of the company or employers - it will only make you look negative.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE LASTING IMPRESSIONS

Make a good impression before you have even sat down in the interview room:
  • Arrive early (10-15 minutes). If you’re unfamiliar with the location, do a dry run in advance
  • Bring extra copies of your resume, references, a notepad & pen.
  • A firm handshake shows confidence and strength!
  • Be polite to everyone, as you don’t know who will be asked their opinion
  • Be professional, but show that you are personable and friendly as well
  • Dress professionally

INTERVIEWING TIPS

Questions and Answers. Answer the interviewers’ questions honestly and thoroughly, but don’t say for too much, or you will lose their interest. Do not answer simple with yes or no either. Try to incorporate examples or reasons of why you answered the way you did. If relevant, explain how you dealt with a situation, and what the outcome was. Most of the time, there is no right or wrong answer to the question. The interviewer is attempting to find out who you are, how you think, and how you will fit into the position and company culture.

Making a So-Called Weakness Seem Positive. When in an interview, you always want to make the best of yourself apparent. So it’s natural to want to make your weaknesses seem like they could benefit the company in some way. Truth be told? A weakness is a weakness no matter how it’s told, and trying to cover that is an even bigger weakness in an employer’s eyes. There is nothing wrong with having weaknesses, we all have them, and the interviewer knows that you are only human! So put forth your strengths, and if you are weaker in an area, admit it. Admitting it show that you are comfortable and aware of what you are capable of. It also tells the employer what they can expect from you, so if you are hired on, you won’t be assigned a responsibility that you can’t handle.

Be yourself: Trying to pretend that you are someone or something that you are not may work out in the interview, but then again, it may not. But if you get hired on the pretense that you are someone else, they will find out, leaving you looking like a fool down the line. You have reached the interview stage because you have the qualifications and experiences that the company is looking for. They know that, based on your resume. The interview is to find out the bigger picture – who you are, what you are like, and how you will fit into the company. So, being yourself if the only way to guarantee that everyone has the chance to make the right decision!
